Following that, presentations were made by two internationally renowned and distinguished professors, C. Peter Timmer, the Thomas D. Cabot Emeritus Professor of Development Studies at Harvard University, and Professor Tim Harper, the Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Director of the Centre for History and Economics at the University of Cambridge.

An Ode to Globalization as seen through the looking glass of Alice in Wonderland, written by Professor Timmer, which was read after his presentation, is reproduced below:

The time has come, the Sultan said
To speak of many things.
Of sailing ships, and rubber trees,
Tin mines and rice paddies.
The winds of commerce that shaped Perak,
Created fortunes and despair.
That rich history, now revealed for all to read,
Is Globalization, a force for ill or fair.
But with a firm hand on the tiller,
Perak will succeed.

In his Royal Address, HRH Sultan Nazrin Shah, observed that his book looks back over two centuries of globalization’s changing impacts—both positive and negative—on Perak, and on its towns and communities.
